Autobau, the most beautiful car museum in Switzerland

Autobau, Switzerland’s most beautiful automobile museum, is located in Romanshorn (TG), on the shores of Lake Constance. It brings together more than 120 cars selected with great taste by Fredy Lienhard, the owner. And if Ferrari, Porsche and various F1 single-seaters displayed at Autobau are worth the trip, the same goes for the historic buildings that house the museum and which are perfect for organizing receptions and companies’ outings.

[eltdf_dropcaps type=”normal” color=”” background_color=””]F[/eltdf_dropcaps]redy Lienhard, the man without whom the Autobau would not exist, is known today primarily as a former pilot and a particularly perspicacious collector. Its museum shelters more than 120 cars, including several F1 cars, mainly Sauber, as well as some of the most beautiful Ferrari and Porsche ever built. When he had managed his company Lista, specializing in office furniture, he had supported many pilots, starting with the Vaudoise Simona de Silvestro and the Biennese Neel Jani who are both factory pilots at Porsche today. During our visit to Autobau, Fredy Lienhard was very happy to answer our questions. “My favorite car in the museum? This is the Porsche RS Spyder that I raced in the United States”, he replied. And when asked how his passion for motorsport came to him, he replied that it had been passed on to him by his father, Alfred Lienhard, who had competed in several hill climbs behind the wheel of a Porsche 356 in the fifties. Porsche is one of Fredy Lienhard’s favorite brands. But Ferrari also holds an important place in his heart. Its museum also presents some of the most beautiful models of these two brands. Thus, Porsche 911 RSR, Carrera GT and 918 Spyder, as well as the Ferrari F40, LaFerrari and 330 GTO will be indicated. “This last one is my favorite. I love its lines, which are among the most beautiful of the sixties”, said Yvonne Stütz, Managing Director of Autobau.

Besides Porsche and Ferrari, Alfa Romeo are also present in number. The same goes for some of the most iconic models of the 20th century. These include, above all, the Lamborghini Miura and the Mercedes 300 SL among sports cars, as well as the Citroën 2CV and the Volkswagen Beetle among the more popular models. Swiss brands are not forgotten with, in alphabetical order, Enzmann, Monteverdi, Rinspeed, Sauber and Sbarro. “There is really something for everyone and it is a real privilege to be able to organize receptions in the ambiance of so many exceptional cars,” says Yvonne Stütz. “The coronavirus with which we have had to deal in recent months has certainly had a negative influence on the number of events organized at Autobau. But, on the other hand, last summer we welcomed many Swiss tourists who visited our museum, even those from Romandie. We hope that there will be also a lot this year”, concludes the Managing Director of Autobau, who would like to point out that the museum is open seven days a week during the months of July and August. The rest of the year it is open every Sunday. As for private tours, they can be booked any day of the week.
