Sébastien Buemi, 20 Years at the Highest Level of Motorsport

Sébastien Buemi has been competing against the best drivers in the world for 20 years. From facing future world champion Sebastian Vettel in Formula BMW in 2004 to his four victories at the 24 Hours of Le Mans, he continues to make his mark in both F1 and Formula E. He has driven it all—not just as part of his story, but also out of a deep passion for cars. A passion that the five-time world champion nurtures in his private museum, which we had the privilege of visiting during an event organized by Alpian Bank.

SÉBASTIEN BUEMI, 20 YEARS AT THE HIGHEST LEVEL OF MOTORSPORT

Thursday, October 10, 2024.

Here we find a discreet building in the industrial zone of a small city in Canton Vaud. Antoine Buemi, Sébastien Buemi’s father, welcomed us and had him take center stage, revealing a true surprise. Behind several Gran Turismo cars, such as a Porsche 911 GT2 RS and a Ferrari Testarossa, stand his racing cars. “Each of these cars was very important for my son’s career,” explains Antoine Buemi.

The first vehicle is a Formula BMW. “That car was truly decisive for me,” Sébastien Buemi recalls as he joins us. “When I drove this car, at the end of my first season in single-seaters after several years in karting, I distinguished myself by finishing third in the Formula BMW championship and often keeping up with Sebastian Vettel, who won the title.”

„At the wheel, after my very first single-seater season following several years of karting, I stood out by finishing third in the Formula BMW championship, often matching the pace of Sebastian Vettel, who won the title.“

At Just 20 Years Old in F1

Following the success of his outstanding performances, Red Bull supported Sébastien Buemi for a second season in Formula BMW in 2005, where he finished as vice-champion behind future F1 driver Nico Hülkenberg. With Red Bull’s backing, his career truly took off. In 2007, not only did he finish as the runner-up in the European F3 Championship, but he also made a strong impression during the Monaco Grand Prix. As a last-minute substitute for the GP2 race, ahead of the F1 event, Sébastien Buemi qualified in fourth place and finished seventh, despite never having driven on the Monaco circuit or piloted a GP2 car before. Red Bull’s decision-makers were convinced they had found an exceptional talent in Sébastien Buemi, and in 2009, he was given a seat at Toro Rosso for his first season in F1.

In his very first Grand Prix, at just 20 years old, he finished seventh and scored his first points in the World Championship—an achievement reminiscent of Alain Prost’s feat in 1980. Naturally, his first F1 car holds a prominent place in Sébastien Buemi’s private museum, alongside his 2007 F3 car and the GP2 car from Monaco. As for Alain Prost, who later led Renault’s Formula E team, he went on to recruit Sébastien Buemi for the groundbreaking 100% electric championship, a collaboration that led to a title win in 2016.

Five-Time World Champion

He has also claimed five world championship titles: one in Formula E and four in the World Endurance Championship in 2014, 2019, 2022, and 2023. Added to this are his four victories at the 24 Hours of Le Mans in 2018, 2019, 2020, and 2022, all with Toyota. “My museum includes the Toyota from my first victory at Le Mans. There’s also a Renault from Formula E,” continues Sébastien Buemi. The Toyota and the Renault perfectly illustrate the new direction his career took when his time in F1 came to an end.

Reflecting on his 20 years in motorsport, Sébastien Buemi is quick to acknowledge his parents, who made significant sacrifices to help him enter the world of racing, as well as his grandfather Georges Gachnang, who competed in the 24 Hours of Le Mans in 1960. Although Sébastien Buemi has not raced in F1 since 2011, his schedule remains full. In 2025, he will continue racing with Toyota in endurance and with Envision in Formula E. Additionally, he plays a key role in Max Verstappen’s success in F1. “For about fifteen of the 24 Grands Prix in a season, I actually travel to Red Bull in England to work on the simulator and help the engineers find the best setups for Max Verstappen,” concludes Sébastien Buemi.

For twenty years, Sébastien Buemi has battled against the world’s best drivers. From his duels with future world champion Sebastian Vettel in Formula BMW in 2004 to his four victories at the 24 Hours of Le Mans, along with his impressive achievements in Formula 1 and Formula E, the Vaudois driver is not only the most successful Swiss racer in history but also a true car enthusiast. This passion is showcased in his private museum, which we had the opportunity to visit during an event organized by Alpian Bank.

A Hidden Gem in Vaud

What awaited us there was simply amazing. Behind several grand touring cars, including a Porsche 911 GT2 RS and a Ferrari Testarossa, six racing cars are on display. „Each of them played a key role in my son’s career,“ explains Antoine Buemi.

The first car we see is a Formula BMW. „This car was truly decisive for me,“ Sébastien Buemi, who has now joined us, tells us. „In my very first single-seater season, after years of karting, I managed to finish third in the Formula BMW championship and often matched the pace of Sebastian Vettel, who won the title.“

Thanks to his exceptional performances, Sébastien Buemi caught the attention of Red Bull, which supported him for a second season in Formula BMW in 2005. Red Bull quickly recognized that they had found a real talent in Sébastien Buemi, and in 2009, they gave him a seat at Toro Rosso for his first F1 season.

At just 20 years old, Buemi finished his first Grand Prix in 7th place and scored his first championship points, an achievement reminiscent of Alain Prost’s performance in 1980. His 2007 F3 car and the GP2 car from Monaco now hold prominent places in his private museum. Later, Prost, who was leading Renault’s Formula E team, recruited Buemi for the groundbreaking 100% electric championship, a collaboration that resulted in a title win in 2016.

Fifth World Championship Title

Today, the Vaudois driver boasts five world championships: one in Formula E and four in endurance racing (2014, 2019, 2022, and 2023). In addition, he has four victories at the 24 Hours of Le Mans in 2018, 2019, 2020, and 2022, all with Toyota. “I made sure to include the Toyota from my first Le Mans win in the museum. There’s also a Formula E Renault,” says Buemi. These cars symbolize the new direction his career took when the doors of F1 closed.

Reflecting on his years at the top of motorsport, Sébastien Buemi is quick to thank his parents, who made many sacrifices to support his global success, as well as his grandfather Georges Gachnang, who participated in the 24 Hours of Le Mans in 1960. Although Buemi hasn’t raced in F1 since 2011, his schedule remains packed. In 2025, he will return to Toyota in endurance racing and with Envision in Formula E. He will also continue to play a key role in Max Verstappen’s success in F1. “For about 15 of the 24 races in a season, I go to Red Bull in England to work on the simulator and help find the best setups for Max Verstappen,” Buemi concludes.

„In my first single-seater race, after several years of karting, I managed to finish in third place in the Formula BMW championship and often kept pace with Sebastian Vettel, who won the title.“
